I am a 15 year old guy and I loveee to sing, but I think I have vocal nodules... or polyps I am not sure. I lost a big part of my range, my voice gets tired easy, and it hurts sometimes when I sing :/ Is surgery the only way ? thanks! :)

surgery will not just sweep away the nodules and leave your voice as good as new. that is a HUGE misconception. your vocal chords are incredibly delicate and will almost never benefit from invasive surgery. you run a very high risk of developing scar tissue where the doctors cut away at the nodule, and having scar tissue where the nodules were is pretty much just as bad as having the nodule itself. since a nodule is really a kind of callous, there is no way to cleanly slice it off. the doctors would basically be hacking at your vocal chords. that's what happened to julie andrews; she developed nodules, had surgery to remove them, ended up with scar tissue, and her career was over.

in any case, the first step would be to go to a doctor if you have not already. not just your regular physician (although i would recommend going to them to point you in the right direction), but find a good nose ear and throat doctor. your problem might not even be nodules, you may have just strained your voice and will need to rest it for a while. if you have already been to a doctor and have been told you do indeed have nodules, don't rush into surgery. sometimes if your voice is already strained, it can make your chords swollen and can make it hard for the doctor to judge exactly what's wrong. rest your voice for a while, then have your chords re checked out.

furthermore, even if you have nodules, surgery is not always necessary. in fact, depending on the severity of the nodules, usually it isn't necessary. you may have to take it easy on your voice for quite a while, but in my opinion, that's way better than having surgery for a quick fix and running the risk of ruining your voice forever. generally, if you aren't planning on pursuing a heavy-weight career in singing, there are ways of shrinking the nodules and making them more flexible so that your voice is up to par. basically, even if you were to have surgery, the nodes are hardly every fully gone. bottom line, you have no way of knowing if surgery will be necessary until you go to a doctor. the only thing you should take away from this and any other post or website on the internet as truth, is to go to a doctor.

check out this website: www.voicemedicine.com/nodules.htm#xx and above all, GO TO A DOCTOR.
